Twitter and end-to-end encryption

Sometimes we wander off to the most recent news about issues regarding the internet security. This is the case today as well, as we are going to discuss Twitter and its new feature, including end-to-end encryption.

Since 2013 there have been rumors about Twitter bringing end-to-end encryption to its direct messages. Finally, almost 5 years after the encryption era began, the company is now testing encrypted direct messaging. Named as “secret conversation” the feature has been spotted in the latest version of the APK of Twitter.

What is end-to-end encryption?

Previously we have had articles about the topic, but to sum up the basics about it we can say that end-to-end encryption is the most secure way to communicate privately and securely online.

End to end encryption means that only the sender and the recipient can see the messages they are exchanging. It prevents eavesdroppers, including telecom providers, Internet providers, and even the secret service from being able to access the content of the message. Also, even if hackers compromise the servers where the data is stored, they cannot decrypt it, as they do possess the decryption keys.

The Secret Conversation

With Twitter, it seems that the Secret Conversation feature is available only to a small number of users for testing. So, if you are one of the lucky ones, you might be able to try it out before the majority of the people do.

The new feature is much like Secret Conversations on Facebook, meaning that you have to initiate the encrypted messaging service yourself with others, and it is not used by default.

Besides Secret Conversation, Twitter is also working on an in-app "Data Saver" mode, which is aimed to save some internet data by disabling autoplay for videos and loading of heavy images.

End-to-end encryption technologies have already been in use for several years now and are crucial to safe online communication. Not only messages can be protected, but files and data as well, that are stored in the cloud or sent via internet. DocuBank as well shifts the focus to end-to-end encryption based services for the protection of customers’ sensitive files and information that are stored in the application.
